Shakshuka — a hearty one-skillet dish of gently poached eggs in a tasty mixture of simmering tomatoes, green peppers, onions, garlic and spices. The dish is a vibrant palette of bright red simmering tomatoes with poached eggs that has runny yolks, with a distinctive sour spicy flavour that resembles Mediterranean cuisine, usually served with toast bread on the side. The name ‘shakshuka’ essentially means ‘all mixed up’, and it is presumed to have originated in either Yemen or Tunisia. Shakshuka is not a common dish in Malaysia and is only served in some cafes and restaurants, as we share little food culture similarities with Mediterranean cuisine.
