Shakshuka — a hearty one-skillet dish of gently poached eggs in a tasty mixture of simmering tomatoes, green peppers, onions, garlic and spices. The dish is a vibrant palette of bright red simmering tomatoes with poached eggs that has runny yolks, with a distinctive sour spicy flavour that resembles Mediterranean cuisine, usually served with toast bread on the side. The name ‘shakshuka’ essentially means ‘all mixed up’, and it is presumed to have originated in either Yemen or Tunisia. Shakshuka is not a common dish in Malaysia and is only served in some cafes and restaurants, as we share little food culture similarities with Mediterranean cuisine. Shakshuka is a vegetarian and gluten-free dish suitable to be consumed by many regardless of religion and health conditions. It has low levels of carbohydrates and fats, making it a perfect healthy meal alternative for anytime of the day. Elevate the dish with extra veggies or meat, or add some cheese and plant-based proteins like crumbled feta and tofu. Learn how to make a hearty shakshuka dish that you can enjoy anytime at home! Firstly, stir fry some onion and garlic until fragrant in a pan. Then, sprinkle some coriander and throw in some sliced capsicum and stir well.
