A shepherd pie is essentially a meat pie with a mashed potato crust. Initially referred to as cottage pie, the shepherd’s pie got its name when minced lamb began to be used as its fillings instead of minced beef. A British classic often referred to as the poor man’s food, the pie was invented as a method for peasant housewives to preserve and repackage leftover meat. Back in those days, there would be unused meat after preparing for a weekend roast. Without the convenience of modern food preservation technology, peasants came up with a way to repurpose the unused meat into a pie by using affordable potatoes, mashed and mixed with butter as a crust. Until today, the shepherd pie is still a quintessential comfort food enjoyed by the British. Create this simple yet delicious British culinary classic to be savoured at home! Firstly, prepare the filling for the shepherd pie. Slice potatoes and boil them for 8 minutes until soft. Meanwhile, fry some garlic, onion, carrots, mushrooms and chillies until a little soft. Next, add in minced meat, stock cube, tomato ketchup and fresh tomatoes to create the gravy. Pour in a bit of water and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes. In a separate bowl, mash a few potatoes with butter, milk and MAGGI® CukupRasa™ to create the pie crust. Place filling in a pie dish, top with the mashed potato and bake it in the oven, top grill at 180℃ for 10 - 15 minutes. Warm and flaky crust, hot and savoury filling — a tasty shepherd’s pie is ready to be served! Satisfy your pie cravings! Good to Know

Russet potatoes have a more “flaky” texture due to high starch and low moisture content, making them perfect for baking.
